All I can say is “holy weather!” My reputation of bringing bad weather is becoming more and more accurate with every tournament, and this weekend didn’t disappoint. This past weekend’s tournament at Catigny Golf was played on the Hillside and Lakeside nines. The nines were almost as opposite as Saturday and Sunday’s weather. The participants started on the Hillside nine and found it to be fair in pin placements and in length; however there was some frustration with the pin placements and blind shots on the Lakeside nine causing there to be a significant stroke difference in back nine and front nine scores.
Saturday was a great day for golf… and it showed in the scores! We had 14 participants shoot in the 70’s and four people Charlie Netzel (Boys 12-13), Brendan Salvino (Boys 14-15), Jordan Wetsch (Boys 14-15), and Kris Yoo (Girls 15-19) were tied going into Sunday for “12-19 Weekend Medalist”.
Sunday’s weather was brutal. We were all hoping that we would get a break from the rain, but it never happened. To make things worse, the weather was about ten degrees colder than the original forecast called for.
In the Boys 8-9 division Aaron Dobbs was our only participant. Aaron had a great time on the course, despite the weather and was very happy to have seen two muskrats on the Lakeside nine.
In the Boys 10-11 division Russell Matos had an impressive two days shooting 78 on Saturday and 82 on Sunday to win medalist honors. Steele Graham, Tyler Green, and Landon Vaughan improved or shot the same from Saturday to Sunday, despite the horrible weather conditions. Steele Graham even mentioned he doesn’t mind bad weather because he always seems to play better.
In the Boys 12-13 division Raymond Knoll won, shooting a 77 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday. Charlie Netzel came in second after winning in a playoff against Jeff Yoo. The competition between these boys was fierce with there being a 4-stroke difference between first place and sixth place.
In the Boys 14-15 division Jordan Wetsch made his PJGT debut, not only winning his age division, but by being weekend medalist in all the 12-19 age divisions! Congrats to Jordan Wetsch and welcome to the PJGT!
In the Boys 16-19 division Dylan Lee had quite a weekend. Dylan shot an 80 and was tied for second place going into Sunday and shot a 79, despite the weather, to win his age division. Dylan also had an eagle on Lakeside #4 by holing out from 120 yards.
In the Girls 12-14 division Harley Dubsky was very consistent this weekend, shooting 84 on Saturday and 85 on Sunday. She went on to win her age division against Danielle Brown.
In the Girls 15-19 division Kris Yoo won in a playoff against Taylor Quinn and Ashley Kees. Kris shot a 75 on Saturday and went into Sunday’s round tied for “12-19 Weekend Medalist”. Taylor Quinn shot 79 for both days accomplishing her goal of shooting under 80 for both rounds.
Despite the weather everyone had a great attitude and showed how tough and competitive they are for not letting the weather affect their game. Thank you all for playing! - Jackie
