Spring Ahead – to golf season!
Whiskey Creek was completely covered in snow only a week prior to the beginning of the Blue Crab Shootout, but all that changed by the weekend. Warm temperatures and rain washed away the last of old man winter (we hope), and the players teed it up and worked their way around all 18 holes.
FAQ
Q: How did the Boys 14-15 Division do?
A: Quite well! The rain of the first day made the course play extremely long, as drives became plugged, the wind was howling; the only roll to be found was as part of lunch. Despite those conditions, all players fared well, with Eric Sawchak taking a one-stroke lead into Sunday. Somewhat drier conditions (no rain falling, anyway) prevailed on Sunday, and while the balls were still plugging, the wind died down and the scores began to drop. Zach Veshancey and Lucas Farmer dropped 11 and 12 strokes respectively, with Lucas carding a 79. Aaron Staley shot two consistent rounds, and Eric Sawchak repeated his impressive 82 from Saturday. Mason Stutler made a Sunday charge, dropping 11 strokes and taking third. Cas Dickerson shaved 15 strokes on Sunday to card a 70 and take second. But it was Addison Coll’s 71 that earned him the top spot. Way to go!
Q: Despite the rain and the wind, we thought we heard laughter coming from the girls group. Did we?
A: Sure did! If you just heard them instead of seeing them, you’d swear that Nicole Feaster, Liza Freed and Erica DeVal were sitting somewhere on a sunny beach instead of in the middle of a monsoon. These three played their way around the course with style, enjoying each other’s company. Liza carded twin scores both days, regardless of the conditions. Erica and Nicole were tied going into Sunday, but the cold and the rain proved too much for Erica, who became ill and had to withdraw from Sunday’s round. Nicole shaved 13 strokes off Saturday’s score to take first. Congratulations!
Q: And the Boys 16-19 Division?
A: Saturday was a tough day for all players, with Scott Davidson carding the only sub-80 round. Sunday was much improved for all. Newcomer Jason Slater-Barrera was on his way to an improved round, with all but the 18th showing an improvement. Joey Park shaved 13 strokes off Saturday’s round and carded a personal PJGT best 81. Davis Whitmer dropped 11 strokes on his way to a 75 and third, while Michael Hill shaved 7 and carded a 76, earning second. But nothing could stop Scott, as he went low with a 72 and took first. Nice job!
Q: Looks like Sunday brought an improved Boys 12-13 Division as well.
A: Absolutely! Justin Gorton improved his score from Saturday, and Elliott Johnson’s 11 stroke drop earned him third. Max Bell carded a 79 on Sunday to take second. But it was Bennett Wisner’s 75 on Sunday that earned him his sixth straight victory of the season. Nice!
Q: Can anyone stop the Hoff?
A: No, not David Hasselhoff, Teddy Hoffmann! Teddy’s ever-steady play over two days earned him his seventh victory of the season, as well as Weekend Medalist for all the 8-11 Divisions. All aspects of his game were in high gear! Brandon Berry played solidly both days and took second. Ben Gelenberg struck the ball well but couldn’t find a reliable putting stroke and took third. Look for a new putter to make its debut appearance at Reston.
Q: What about Weekend Medalist for the 12-19 Division?
A: Bennett Wisner turned in his scorecard and waited for Scott Davidson, the only person who could take weekend honors from him. Only a 72 from Scott would clinch it. Scott bagged two eagles and delivered the exact 72 he needed. Congratulations to both Scott and Bennett, the only two players who carded sub-80 rounds on both days!
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Blue Crab Shootout – the players, the families and friends, and the course. No one treats players better than Whiskey Creek.
See you at Reston!
